Five Reasons VAUGHAN Is Not Just a Hammer - MARSHALLTOWN®

Five Reasons VAUGHAN Is Not Just a Hammer

VAUGHAN Hammers are engineered for much more than striking nails.

10/24/2025

For more than 150 years, VAUGHAN has designed and manufactured the most innovative hammers in the industry. After all, it was VAUGHAN who introduced the distinctive curve of the hammer claw, the set of the handle, and the shape of the head.  These innovations, along with many more, prove that a VAUGHAN hammer is far more than just a hammer.

#1: Shock-Resistant Hickory Handle

The hickory handle on the California Framer®, for example, absorbs vibration and reduces fatigue better than anything else on the market. Hickory’s natural shock-absorbing qualities make it the top choice for comfort and control.

VAUGHAN’s triple-wedge design, consisting of a hickory wedge and two steel wedges, keeps the head-handle assembly secure. The slightly narrowed grip provides stability during heavy blows, while the larger mid-section offers a comfortable hold for lighter, more precise work.

#2: Heat-Treated Head

Every VAUGHAN hammer head is precision heat-treated to ensure maximum durability and resistance to chipping and wear. This is by far the most important step in the manufacturing process.

It starts with U.S.-made, high carbon steel, then undergoes a carefully controlled tempering process. The striking face, claws, and eye each achieve the perfect balance of hardness and toughness for their specific purpose.

deep hardening

If the striking face is too soft, it can mushroom. On the other hand, if it’s too hard it can become brittle and chip. VAUGHAN’s deep hardening process ensures every surface performs exactly as it should. The claws are slightly softer to resist fracturing under pulling forces, and the eye is even softer.

Pro Tip

Use claw hammers only to strike unhardened nails and nail sets - never hardened nails or chisels.

#3: Multi-Function Design: More Than Driving Nails

VAUGHAN offers a hammer for every trade and task. The Rip Hammer, like a California Framer®, is perfect for framing, rough construction, and concrete form work, while a Curved Claw Hammer is best for finish carpentry and trim work.

For delicate materials, Soft Face Hammers are ideal whether you are assembling furniture or shaping soft sheet metal. A Ball Pain Hammer is perfect for metalworkers. This type of hammer should be used for riveting, center punching, and shaping soft metal. Check out the guide below to find the perfect striking tool for your task!

#4: Balanced for the Trade

When a hammer is balanced right, you can feel it. A well-balanced hammer practically swings itself, reducing muscle strain and tendon fatigue. With VAUGHAN, the head-to-handle weight distribution is fine-tuned for smooth, powerful swings that feel effortless. Each hammer is field-tested by professionals to ensure it meets the demands of the jobsite.

For over 150 years, VAUGHAN has set the standard for what a hammer should be. Every detail shows VAUGHAN’s commitment to American craftsmanship and quality, proving it’s not just a hammer but a tool built to last through the toughest jobs.
